When that email arrives, it doesn’t just say “Congratulations” or “We regret to inform you.” Oh no, Cal Poly prefers to drag out the suspense. The subject line often reads something vague like, “Your Cal Poly Admission Decision is Ready.” You click it, and the page loads slowly, as if the server is laughing at you.
Inside, the first paragraph is agonizingly neutral. It starts with “Thank you for your interest in Cal Poly” and then rambles about their “holistic review process.” By this point, you’ve aged 10 years. Finally, they drop the bomb: “We are pleased to inform you…” or “After careful consideration…” That’s the only sentence your brain processes.
One student told me they actually screamed “SLO or no?” at their laptop. Another admitted they refreshed the portal 47 times in one hour. That’s normal—Cal Poly’s portal is the digital equivalent of a roller coaster with a rusty track.
