What if magic were real, but it came with paperwork, taxes, and a severe shortage of trained professionals? That’s “The Rivers of London” by Ben Aaronovitch. It follows Peter Grant, a London cop who discovers he’s a wizard and gets assigned to the Folly—the magical equivalent of a forgotten branch of the police. Imagine if Harry joined the Aurors, but his boss spent half the time complaining about budget cuts. The books are hilarious, geeky, and full of actual London history. You’ll learn why certain ghosts haunt tube stations and why you should never piss off a river goddess.
What If Umbridge Won? (Spoiler: It’s Terrifying)
Try “Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell” by Susanna Clarke. This is a door-stopper of a novel set in an alternate 1800s where magic is theoretical and dusty. Two very different magicians bring it back—one cautious, one reckless—and it goes about as well as you’d expect. The prose is so dry it could cure a cold, then suddenly, it’s haunted by a gentleman with thistle-down hair who steals your shadow. It’s the most “adult” Harry Potter you’ll ever read, because it takes its time, respects your intelligence, and ends with a dance at a ball that changes the world.
