Let’s face it: some nine-year-olds already act like they’re teenagers. They cross their arms and say they only like video games. For these little philosophers, hand them “Holes” by Louis Sachar. It’s tough, it’s clever, and it has a kid digging holes in the desert for punishment.
It’s also got fate, onions, and a hidden treasure. They’ll pretend they’re too busy to read it, but then you’ll find them sneaking chapters under the covers with a flashlight.
Another sneaky good one is “The One and Only Ivan” by Katherine Applegate. It’s narrated by a gorilla in a mall. Your son might roll his eyes at first, but then he’ll hit the part about friendship and suddenly he’s got dust in his eyes.
Graphic Novels? Yes, Please
Don’t be a book snob about comics. A nine-year-old boy will devour a graphic novel like it’s the last pizza on Earth. “Dog Man” by Dav Pilkey is the cousin of Captain Underpants, and it’s basically a superhero story about a part-dog, part-man cop who chases bad guys.
For something a bit more sci-fi, try “Bone” by Jeff Smith. It’s an epic full of dragons, cow races, and cousins who bicker like real siblings. The artwork is so good, your kid will forget he’s technically “reading.”
And if he loves Minecraft (because of course he does), the “Minecraft: The Island” is a legit novel that feels like a survival game. It’s got zombies, crafting, and the existential dread of being stranded alone. Relatable.
