Let’s rip the band-aid off: most supermarkets are closed on Easter Sunday. I’m sorry if that sentence just ruined your day. In the US, the UK, Canada, and much of Europe, it’s the one day where the grocery gods collectively take a nap. Especially the big chains like Walmart, Tesco, and Kroger. You might as well be trying to buy milk at a monastery.
But—and here’s where it gets sneaky—there are always exceptions. Some stores, like convenience stores attached to gas stations or small urban markets, stay open shorter hours. Some drugstores like CVS or Boots keep their lights on, hoping you’ll buy a sad, overpriced chocolate bunny. Check your local shop, but don’t bet the farm on it. Pro tip from someone who learned the hard way: Google before you go, and check the store’s own website, because Apple Maps lies.
Why Do We Even Have This Rule?
It feels a bit medieval, doesn’t it? In a 24/7 economy where I can order a pizza at 3 AM, shutting down for one day seems almost rebellious. The reasons are a mix of tradition, labor laws, and good old-fashioned guilt. Many countries have laws that restrict trading on public holidays, especially Easter and Christmas. The idea is that workers deserve a day off too. And honestly, who wants to be the poor soul scanning eggs while everyone else is hunting for them?
Easter Sunday Opening Hours Supermarkets: Who’s Open, Who’s Closed This
Plus, let’s be real: if they were open, would you really want to go? Imagine the parking lot chaos. The half-stocked shelves. The underpaid teenager who’d rather be anywhere else. It’s kind of a win for humanity that we collectively agree to stop, even if it’s only for 24 hours. It’s like society’s way of saying, “Hey, maybe eat that leftover ham instead of buying a fresh one.”
