Saltines were invented in the mid-19th century by a baker named—I kid you not—Josiah Bent. He called them “soda crackers” because originally they used baking soda (a leavener!). But modern saltines switched to a steam-based process, making them de facto unleavened. Who needs a time machine when you have cracker trivia?
Also, the name “saltine” comes from the salt sprinkled on top. Revolutionary, right? It’s almost as clever as calling a chocolate chip cookie “chippy.” But hey, it works. The salt gives them that addictive contrast with butter or cheese. Science and marketing in perfect harmony.
