London is the capital city of England. Full stop. But here’s where it gets weird: London is also the capital of the whole United Kingdom, which includes Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It’s like saying the mayor of your neighborhood is also the mayor of your entire state. Confusing? Yes. Does London care? Absolutely not. It’s too busy being fabulous.
A Little History Lesson (Don’t Worry, It’s Fun, I Swear)
Centuries ago, the Romans showed up and said, “Hey, this muddy river is a great spot for a town.” They called it Londinium. A few thousand years and one apocalyptic plague later, it became the capital of England. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom as we know it didn’t even exist yet. So technically, London was running the show before the UK was a glimmer in Parliament’s eye.
If countries were bands, England would be the lead singer, and the UK would be the band name on the ticket. And London? London is the guitar solo that goes on way too long but everyone loves anyway.
